How To Make This Recipe

This is just the overview so you can see what you're actually getting into here. When you are cooking, you'll want to use the full recipe at the bottom of the page.

  1. Preheat your smoker - 180° is ideal. 200° works too.
  2. Non-stick foil is your friend - Put it onto a baking sheet and line with non-stick foil. Parchment paper also works pretty well here.
  3. Brush with olive oil - And make some ½ inch cross-hatches in the top of the cream cheese and then drizzle with olive oil.
  4. Rub - We loved the Roasted Garlic blend from The Spice Guy. It was perfect in this dip!
  5. Smoke - 2 hours is good. 1 ½ would work in a pinch. Go for 3 if you are brave. You can serve this warm or cold, mix it into a dip or spread it onto a bagel. Whatever. You can eat it with a spoon if you want. I won't judge.

Recipe FAQ

Can you use low-fat cream cheese?

No. It gets clumpy and gross and this is not the time for low-fat anything. Live a little. Or not. But substitute at your own risk.

Is smoked cream cheese dip better eaten hot or cold?

Both! You can make this and serve it immediately or you can make it ahead of time and chill it before you serve it.

  1. This sounds amazing, going to try this for the base on my cold veggie pizza! Thanks for this recipe!!

    1. Dooooo it! It would be the perfect addition to something like that. I took one of the bricks I smoked and turned it into artichoke dip that was the best I've EVER had. Stay tuned for that post soon! 😉 Thanks for visiting, and let me know how your veggie pizza goes!

  2. Confirmed - DO NOT use low/reduced fat CC. It melts and then dries out.

My pit temp was also higher since I was cooking bacon burnt ends at the same time, so that could have contributed to my not so successful cook.

    1. Ahhh, yeah. That'll do it! It doesn't hold up to a higher temp very well, in my experience. I've tried to sneak it alongside something else too.

  3. This recipe is super simple and the results are amazing. The cream cheese gets so incredibly flavorful and smokey from being cooked on the Traeger. It's definitely a new favorite in our house.

  4. This cream cheese dip is amazing! I went with the Nashville hot variation and it was the perfect party app.

  5. The cream cheese came out perfectly smoked and had a great flavor. It was so easy to make and only took a few minutes. I will definitely be making this again.

  6. Wow is this delicious! The smoke is not overpowering but adds a really wonderful element to the cream cheese. Thank you!

  7. Delicious! “Olive oil” was listed in the ingredients but not referenced in the instructions that I could tell. I left it out, not wanting to make a barrier or anything to prevent smoke penetration. Was just great with just cheese & rub. Served with cracked as a hot pepper jelly…. Crowd pleaser.

    1. Hey Greg! Looks like you might have just missed it. Here's the first part of step 2: "Put non-stick foil onto a baking sheet. Place the cream cheese onto the foil and drizzle the oil on top."

I'm glad it worked out well without it, and that you and your crowd liked it so much! I think its fantastic. Try it mixed with goat cheese sometime! Game-changer!

    1. @Nicole Johnson, how would I smoke it with charcoal grill need instructions if you have any.

    2. I don't have charcoal instructions specifically, but basically, you just smoke it over indirect heat at approximately the same temperatures that are in the instructions for the pellet grill.

    3. @Marcy Rodgers, soak wood chips for at least an hour. Then make a small pile of briquettes on one side of the grill and light them. Place the cream cheese on the opposite side of the grill and use the grill vents to regulate the temp (more air = more heat).
