0-400 Chicken Wings
There are so many ways to get to a delicious chicken wing. We’re obsessed, and for good reason, too. Wings are delicious, and pretty easy to make too.
This method is one of the simplest we’ve ever made. You don’t even have to preheat the grill. Just season, toss the wings on the grill, and turn it on to 400°. Flip once, and in around an hour* you’ll have perfectly cooked, crispy-skinned wings! Easy!
* The actual time it takes will vary depending on your specific grill. Always cook according to your meat and not the clock!

How to make 0-400 Chicken Wings
This is just the overview so you can see what you’re actually getting into here. When you are cooking, you’ll want to use the full recipe at the bottom of the page.
- Dry – Dry the chicken wings with paper towels well. Damp skin = soggy skin.
- Oil and Rub – Toss the dry wings in the oil and coat with the bbq rub.
- Grill – Put the wings directly on the grill grates and turn the grill on and to 400°.
- Cook – Cook for 30 minutes and then flip the wings. Cook for another 30-45 minutes. The TIME is approximate. Everyone likes their wings a different way. Check once the grill reaches 400, and keep checking every 5 minutes until they are done the way YOU like them.
- Sauce – Sauce the wings with your favorite bbq sauce or buffalo sauce. Or just eat them dry. You do you!
- Enjoy – Serve with celery and carrots and your favorite dipping sauces.

I love reheating my wings in the air fryer! Bonus – it will re-crisp the skin too, heating them up this way, even if they are already sauced.

I agree an hour was way too long.... Maybe my grilla heats up faster than most, cuz even starting cold they were overcooked (195-210 degrees) after only 45 minutes

It definitely depends on the grill, the outside temp, the wind, etc. I've added some caveats to the post that the times are just an estimate, and that people should follow the meat. ;)

You cook the wings for 1 hour at 400?! WAY to long!

@Chuck, No, not too long. You have to start with a cold grill and cold chicken. I've done wings this way for a couple of years. They've come out perfect every time.

Nope! If you read the recipe, it calls to put the wings on a cold grill. My grill takes at least 20-25 minutes to get all the way up to 400 degrees. They cook at 400 for around 30ish minutes, five or take. Also depends on how dry the skin is and how crispy you like it. You can pull them whenever you want.
