Girls Who Grill (Steak, Potatoes, and More!)

The Washington State Beef Commission put on a fantastic event last week that I got to be apart of, and I wanted to share about it with you here because it was such a blast!

This event series is affectionately titled, "Girls Who Grill", and there has been events all over the country supporting this cause.

A whole variety of women from the area were invited to join us at the Simple Goodness Sisters Soda Shop in Wilkeson, Washington, for an afternoon of drinks, food, and learning all about grilling with Weber Grills, Misty Banchero, who you probably know as Seattle Butcher's Wife, and of course, WA Beef.

I was tasked with making the sides for this epic meal, and it was a tough decision what to make and serve to a giant table full of foodie influencers (pressureeeeee), but everything went off without a hitch, and I got to meet some kind, incredible women and we all learned a thing or two throughout the day.

Beautiful Wilkeson, Washington

The location was beautiful, too. I'd never been to Wilkeson, but the history and the town was so nice! It isn't too far off the beaten path, either, so I'll definitely be making a trip back. The town is going through a tough time right now because the bridge that was the entrance to the Mount Rainier national park has been indefinitely shut down...with no plans (or budget) from the state to repair it.

The Weber Searwood Pellet Grills were so easy to use!

That mean that there aren't people just "passing through" anymore, and the local businesses have really been struggling.

If you get the chance to check out this little historical Washington town, it is worth the detour. Also, order from the Simple Goodness Syrup line. They will take your homemade soda (or cocktails) to new levels you didn't know existed. I really want to try their Orange Vanilla syrup in a Creamsicle Slushy Cocktail this summer!

Speaking of cocktails, they made us Blueberry Lavender Margaritas as a little "welcome" drink, and they were perfect.

After we ate and drank and visited (including taking a little impromptu tour of the historic house next door that used to host various "ladies of the night"), we got down to business.

Misty walked us through how to trim a strip loin into invidual New York Strips, and then trim those NY Strips into Manhattan steaks.

Next we all got to mix up our compound butter with different salts, herbs, and spiced, and wrap them up to take home.

And then it was time to grill!

While everyone else was learning the ins and outs of reverse sear, I ran to the back to grab all my dishes to prep and heat. The Searwood made it really easy, and with Misty's little travel charcoal grill, it all was done in time.

Speaking of charcoal...this was the first time I'd ever cooked on charcoal.

I know.

Shocking.

And now I'm hooked. So I'll be on the hunt for a charcoal grill, and once I have one in my hot little hands I'll be starting an Instagram series on it and you'll start seeing recipes for charcoal grilling here on OWYD, too.

Do you have a charcoal grill? What's your favorite brand?

Then it was time for my Summer Berry Crisp, and I'm glad I saved some room. It was fantastic!

If you ever get the chance to go to an event by WA Beef, DO it! You'll learn a lot and make some amazing connections along the way.

Thanks to WA Beef, Colvin Ranch (who sent us all home with beef sticks and flank steaks), Simple Goodness Sisters, Weber, Misty Banchero, and everyone who attended and contributed to making this event such a success!
