Homemade Smoked Baked Beans Recipe

Baked beans have made an appearance at pretty much every barbecue and summer cookout I’ve ever been to. Including the ones in Northern Minnesota which (at least in my neighborhood) always involved a gas grill, copious amounts of tuna pasta salad, and all the hot dogs, cheeseburgers, and brats my little midwestern hands could grab.

Beans were a hard no for me until I was well into my 20’s, and even into my early 30’s I’d still push aside most of the beans in a bowl of chili, so baked beans as a kid was an IMMEDIATELY no kind of thing.

Not anymore!

Nothing against any certain brand of baked beans that you buy in the store with the most adorable mascot and commercials ever, but if you’ve never tried homemade smoked baked beans you are seriously missing out.

How to make Smoked Baked Beans

This is just the overview so you can see what you’re actually getting into here. When you are cooking, you’ll want to use the full recipe at the bottom of the page.

1

Preheat your smoker

220° is where you want it. Get it as close to that as you can.

2

Prep your pan

Take a grill-safe baking dish (like the Made In Cookware set featured in these photos) and prep it with cooking spray. Pour in the beans. Mix the sauce together in a separate bowl and then pour on top of the baked beans.

3

Smoke em’

Overall it is going to take a couple of hours. Stir occasionally, and check frequently during the last 20ish minutes. Pull when everything is bubble, hot, and the sauce is the consistency that you prefer.

Sauce

  • 2 cups ketchup
  • 1 cup dark brown sugar

  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon Whiskey Bent bbq Old Fashioned rub (or your favorite is fine here)

  3. Pour the beans and onion into the pan. Top with the sauce and stir gently. Stick the bacon slices into the mix.
  4. Put the pan on the grill, shut the lid, and go do something else for an hour.
  5. Stir gently and go away again.
  6. Cook for another hour-ish, or until the sauce is thickened to your liking and reduced and everything is bubbly and melded together.

The only thing I changed was reduce the ketchup in half and add 4 tablespoons of molasses.

@Don Lawrence, did this help cut down on the tang?

Love this recipe only problem is it’s pretty overwhelmingly tangy
