Mandarin Orange Cream Cocktail
So the other night I was trying to get some work done, and ummmmm – hello. 7 kids running around, making me crazy, preventing me from even having an entire coherent thought running through my head much less enough thoughts in a row to get a work project done.
Then I remembered that I had several 12 packs of Canada Dry Sparkling Seltzer Water just waiting for me to make up a fantastic cocktail.
So I loaded up my drink tray and headed out to the front porch – kidless (thanks Mom & Jeremiah!), to do some drink mixing.
I love the Canada Dry Mandarin Orange flavor the most out of all three that I tried! Its all natural, 0 calories, and n0 sodium. I prefer a bit of sweetness in my cocktails, so I threw in some brown sugar simple syrup, and some Orange Whipped Vodka, and topped that with the sparkling seltzer water.
And you know what I did next? I sat my tired butt down on my front porch and did – nothing. I sipped my drink, kicked my feet up, and relaxed. Eventually I did pick up the laptop again and got some actual, you know, WORK done, but those few minutes of doing absolutely nothing? Glorious. And rare. I had forgotten how busy it is with a baby and two toddlers in the house. Or maybe I had blocked it out. We’ll never know I guess, but either way I’m now finding out again.
For some reason, in my head I was thinking it was going to be way easier doing the baby thing without the whole recovering from childbirth thing and wild and crazy hormonal shifts thing as well – bbbuuuuuuttttt not so much.
I’m crying a lot less ;), but otherwise? Just as hard.
I find newborns fairly simple to take care of, and they sleep ALLLLL the time. I got initiated directly into a baby who is THHHHIIIIIS close to crawling, and a toddler that is firmly into the tremendous 2’s, even though his birthday is still a few months away.
Thank God for my mom, who has been showing me the ropes and the tricks and teaching me all about the likes and dislikes of those two little ones, and thank God for those boys as well. They are amazing, and its been a crazy but really fun week getting acquainted. Some day we’ll look back on this week and laugh at how hectic and wild it was.

- 1 can Canada Dry Mandarin Orange Sparkling Seltzer Water
- 2 oz Orange Whipped Vodka
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar mandarin orange simple syrup*, see notes
- Mix together ingredients and serve over ice.
Make simple syrup by zesting one mandarin orange, and mixing with equal parts brown sugar and water. Simmer over medium heat until the sugar is dissolved completely. Strain zest out of mixture, and store in fridge. Will keep for several weeks covered and chilled.
