Oven Fried Onion Rings

These oven fried onion rings are covered in a crispy and ridiculously good, crunchy, crushed Cape Cod Potato Chips coating. They are sponsoring this post, and I was so excited to create a recipe using these awesome chips! All opinions are 100% my own.

Cape Cod Oven Fried Onion Rings

I LOVE onion rings. Like – a LOT. That’s pretty odd, because I grew up as an avid onion HATER. Like – I wouldn’t touch anything that was even made near an onion. I actually gagged when I accidentally ate one. It took me a long long time to cross over onto the dark side, but once I got here? I’m sold.

French onion anything. Sandwich? Okay. Meatballs? YUP. Onion straws. Fajitas. Onion rings. Caramelized Onions. LOTS of onions in my spaghetti sauce. Just bring on the onions. Onion dip. Onion gravy. Seriously. LOVE.

Cape Cod Oven Fried Onion Rings

I did an oven fried onion rings recipe before on the blog that you can see here, but ummmmmm – it really really needed to be reshot. It was my first go with a brand new lens. Also trying out an artificial light-box too to top it off. It did NOT go well, in hindsight, but I was pretty excited about it back then!

Onion Rings

Did you know that Cape Cod chips has been expanding their availability Westward, and they are now in over 60% of the stores on the West Coast? That’s a big “Yay!” for me here in Washington!

Kettle chips make the PERFECT onion ring coating, and I just love this oven frying technique. It requires a LOT less oil than traditional deep frying, and is cleaner, quicker, and you get the same great crunch you would get from the deep-frying cousins to these rings.

I LOVE using avocado oil for this. Its smoke point isn’t until 500 degrees, so the 450 degree oven that would have most oils running for cover is perfect for avocado oil.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you substitute a different kind of oil for the avocado oil make sure you compensate by reducing your oven temp or you could smoke the oil or potentially worse. Be careful!

These oven-fried onion rings are crispy and delicious and coated with Kettle Chips! I LOVE these rings! It is like the best french fried onion ring EVER.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 medium onions, sliced and rings separated
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 8 oz bag Cape Cod Reduced Fat Kettle Cooked Potato Chips, crushed
  • 1/4 - 1/3 cup avocado oil

Instructions

  1. Mix the egg, milk, and 1/3 cup of flour together. Soak the onion rings in the mixture for 1 hour. Drain, reserving liquid.
  2. Preheat oven to 450, and place oil on a large cookie sheet. You want to generously coat your pan with oil, but not put enough to slosh around a lot. Be careful! Place cookie sheet in oven and let preheat.
  3. Place the cayenne, salt, and flour into a dish. Place the crushed potato chips in another dish. Coat the onion rings first in the egg wash, next in flour, then back in the egg wash and immediately into the chips. Place chipped onion rings onto another plate and continue coating rings until they are all done.
  4. Carefully place onion rings onto the preheated pan in a single layer leaving some space between. Bake for 4-5 minutes, and then flip the rings over carefully. Bake another 4-5 minutes, remove from oven and serve immediately.

Notes

If you substitute a different kind of oil you MUST adjust your oven temp down to compensate. Avocado oil has a high smoke point which allows you to bake these at 450. Other oils have lower smoke points. Be careful!

It’s still onions for me, although I have come to love onion rings, cooked well, and onions cooked to a mushy, carmelized oblivion that are within other dishes. God forbid they have any remaining texture…. Cuz ya, it doesn’t end well.

And “peppers” bell, jalapeños, sweet, spicy, colors — doesn’t matter. In nearly any form they are still VILE! Especially raw pepper. Hurl* How DO people eat them? Gawd, the flavor is disgusting!!! My only “exception” to my pepper rule is canned fire roasted mild diced green chilies, chopped ultra fine or puréed, used with many other ingredients to flavor Mexican or Tex-Mex dishes. That’s it.

I love everything about this recipe. The fact that you used my favorite potato chip and you fried them in avocado oil! Best onion rings ever! Pinning!

I'm the same way about onions! I couldn't stand them as a kid but I love them. Still can't eat them raw but I'm all about onion rings and stuff like that. These look scrumptious!

Oh my GOSH! I can't eat them raw either. AT all. I try at the taco stands to get in on the raw onion on the tacos? And I just can't. I always have them go really "light". Ha!!

I love onion rings but I don't love how greasy they typically are. Can't wait to try these!

These are definitely less greasy than their deep-fried cousins. The chips give them crunch but don't soak up a lot of oil in the process.
