Homemade Hot Chocolate

This is not your typical hot chocolate. Know why? You have to melt actual chocolate in order to make it. It is so worth it. SO WORTH IT. You’ll never go back to the powdered stuff again after trying my homemade hot chocolate.

Homemade Hot Chocolate

If you are used to scooping some powder from a can into a glass and adding some hot water to it, you’ve never really had hot chocolate.

This dark hot chocolate uses 60% Cacao Bittersweet Chocolate Chips, which gives it a rich, deep, dark chocolate flavor that just cannot be beaten with any other method.

It is also TOTALLY simple to make.

Ghirardelli Hot Chocolate

How to make hot chocolate with chocolate chips

First, place two cups of half-and-half into a microwave safe bowl, and heat until hot.

In my microwave, it took about 2.5 minutes. It should be hot to the touch, but not boiling.

Pour the hot half and half over one bag of your favorite chocolate chips.

Wait for 2 minutes, and then stir gently until the chocolate is melted and mixed into the half and half.

Pour the chocolate mixture into a blender (carefully!) and blend for 30-60 seconds, until fully combined. With blender on low, add 2 cups of milk, and one teaspoon of vanilla.

Pour, top with whipped cream, and serve immediately! For a special touch, use glass and line the glass with white melting wafers. The hot chocolate will re-melt the wafers.

If you are serving to adults who like their hot chocolate actually hot, you may need to heat the mixture again in the microwave for about a minute. Blending it and adding the milk cools it down significantly.

What kind of chocolate chips should I use?

For this recipe, I used dark chocolate chips, but you can use whatever variety is your favorite. Try and get the best quality chocolate you can. It is the star of this show, so if you buy lower quality chocolate it will really show in the end result.

Can I use a chocolate bark or bar instead of chips?

Yup! You can use almost any kind of chocolate to make this. If you use a chocolate bar, just make sure to chop it very finely to make sure it melts evenly.

What kind of add-ins would be good in homemade hot chocolate?

My marshmallow fluff would be an AMAZING addition to this rich hot chocolate. Also, my version of Kahlua.
